“If there’s anything in life that we should be passionate about, it’s the gospel. And I don’t mean passionate about sharing it with others. I mean passionate about thinking about it, dwelling on it, rejoicing in it, allowing it to color the way we look at the world. Only one thing can be of first importance to each of us. And only the gospel ought to be.”

Furthermore, if angels, who have been around since time immemorial, long to look into the gospel (1 Peter 1:12), why would we even for a second think it's okay to avert our eyes to something we reckon deeper, more advanced, more interesting, more dynamic, etc.?

The more I study Colossians, the more I'm convinced that what C.J. and you talk about in this blog begins here: "For in Christ the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority" (Colossians 2:9-10).
If you are not filled in Christ through the gospel, then you won't dwell on the gospel and you will want to fill yourself up in other things other than the glory of Jesus.
