Gut Check: Five Questions for Pastors

Pastors, ask yourselves these questions.

1. How often do I get out of my office and serve somewhere in the community?

2. How often do I read my Bible other than for sermon preparation?

3. How integral is Jesus to my sermon? (How often does he appear in it? One mention? Two? Is he an illustration? A quote? Is he the point of the message? Could the same sermon be preached to Muslims if you substituted "Allah" for "God"?)

4. If someone from my church is in the hospital or dying, is it likely that I will visit them? (If it's not likely, is it possible?)

5. What is the chief indicator of the spiritual health of my church?

Fabulous list! And yet:

Gut Check: Five Questions for church-goers

1) How often do I get out of my home and serve somewhere in the community?

2) How often do I read my Bible other than preparing for small group or Sunday school?

3) How integral is Jesus to my conversations on the phone? Could the same conversation be held between Muslims with no difference?

4) If someone in my church is in the hospital or dying, is it likely that I will visit them? Or their family? Or even drop off a meal? Or even phone to ask when help they need?

5) What is the chief indicator of my own spiritual health?

Hey Jared;
I like to use these.

How many time is Jesus mentioned?
Is Jesus the subject of the verbs? (i.e. Who is doing the action of the verbs?)
What are the verbs? Jesus forgives. Jesus creates. Jesus rescues. Etc.

This makes for a Christ focused / Cross Centered sermon.
